Chinese security forces were reportedly surrounding three monasteries outside Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, on Thursday after hundreds of monks took to the streets this week in what are believed to be the largest Tibetan protests against Chinese rule in two decades.
Tibet was taken militarily by China in 1951 and has remained contentious, particularly because of the bitter relations between the Communist Party and the Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism.

Up to 60 Buddhist monks were arrested in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa as authorities quashed protests marking an uprising that led to the exile of the Dalai Lama, Radio Free Asia said on Tuesday.
Chinese troops killed tens of thousands of Tibetans, according to a report on the incident on the Tibetan government-in-exile's website.
China sent troops into Tibet in 1950 and officially "liberated" it a year later.
In a speech to coincide with the anniversary of the 1959 uprising, the Dalai Lama on Monday attacked China's human rights record and accused Chinese authorities of "unimaginable and gross violations" in his homeland.
"For nearly six decades Tibetans have had to live in a state of constant fear under Chinese repression," the 72-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner said from his base in Dharamsala, India.
Also on Monday, Indian police banned about 100 Tibetan exiles in India from going ahead with a historic trek to their homeland as part of pro-independence protests ahead of the Beijing Olympics.

This is an extremely important topic which clearly exposes the hypocritical standards of Chindu.
The key rationale behind this has been N.Ram's communist philosophies which deem any opposition to China to be separatist or colonialist. As HF has pointed out there have been some excellent articles written in several forums about this.
The pinnacle of hypocrisy is statements like violence created by the Tibetians. Surely the monks and their gangs of armed guerillas are upto something.
About a decade ago, after Kundun was released, I had a discussion about the Tibet issue with N.Ravi who was then the editor of the Chindu, he reluctantly pointed me to have a discussion N.Ram(then editor of Frontline) who controlled that domain who ranted about Tibetians being violent separatists and not following the glorious Communist Constitution which provided them "autonomous" previleges.
As someone pointed out, a similar situation is faced in another part of the world where the happenings are focused in diametric opposite way by Chindu. That place happens to be Palestine.
Speaks volumes of the double-speak of Chindu.

I think the LiC will cancel his annual pilgrimage to China. Instead we can expect comrade Pallavi to tell us some weeks later how Tibet has defeated the "external" destabilizing forces and is continuing its march towards "development"
B Raman's recent article in Toutlook had this curious para:
" During the last one year or more, they had sponsored the visits of many foreign journalists, including from India, to Tibet by the newly-constructed railway line. Some of these journalists duly impressed by what they were shown painted an idyllic picture of Tibet under the Chinese rule."
Any guess which "journalists" he's talking about?

Also the Chindu only quotes part of Dalai Lama's statements and gives prominence to his statement that China deserves to host the Olympic games in it's headline.No mention of his statement that a genocide is taking place in Tibet, which is actually the headline in most other newspapers.
