morning The Chindu carried a report on H D Kumaraswamy's visit to The
Chindu office claiming that it was a surprise visit!!

politics. He was the first one to write an editorial and concluding
that Kumaraswamy has had enough with BJP and parting ways is the only

even the Karnataka journos were surprised to see Kumaraswamy making
time to meet N Ram amidst of such a busy schedule of him and amidst of
high political drama when 17 BJP ministers had resigned en masse.
The Chindu also doesnt believe that it was a betrayal by the Gowdas.
While reporting it makes use of inverted commas very intelligently!

Casting pearls before swine

One wonders what the Reader's Editor (RE) does. Is he there as Ram's mouth piece?
The way he dismisses criticism against CBCNN is shocking to say the least.

It is a tiny minority of The Hindu’s vast readership that communicates with the
Readers’ Editor. Many of them write in the plural, “we readers .…” But their opinions cannot be assumed to be representative of the silent majority. Many of these respondents have strong biases. We can tell them apart.

So what does he imply?
1.People who criticize are biased. They need not be taken seriously.
2.Those who do not write in to the Reader's editor are happy with CBCNN.They are unbiased.

Has not CBCNN made sweeping generalizations and presented views as if they were a reflection of the majority?What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I have never written to the Reader's editor.I don't see the point in casting pearls before swine.Many others could have thought so.Why does Narayanan overlook this possibility?

If those who criticize have "strong biases", those who remain silent may also have "strong biases". So when there is a toss between two biased groups, who decides which group is right? Probably a left bias is right.

The RE goes on to add..

In the midst of this mass are the occasional ones that command attention because of the background of the person and the refined, sober way the views are put forth.

So, for you to be heard you must have a "background" certified by CBCNN to be good. Also, the views must be put forth in a "refined, sober " way. Does this rule apply to the likes of Harish Khare, Neena Vyas and Vidhya Subramainan? Or is it reserved only for readers holding views against the paper's style of reporting?

I am a reader of The Hindu since 1973 and it has shaped my understanding of the world and life itself … I am deeply troubled by the coverage given to left-related issues. Criticism of the left is at best muted if not airbrushed.The massive Kerala CPM factional war is hardly getting any coverage, especially for a southern based newspaper. The latest is the soft-pedalling of the PM’s comments to The Telegraph newspaper regarding left support or a lack of it for the nuclear deal. Most newspapers gave it wide coverage.

Many middle-aged readers feel that the paper has lost its balance … There is a view that the paper is far too ideologically involved with the left parties.

Although the reader in question has decided to put Simi Garewal to shame,he pretty much sums up what this blog has been screaming since its inception.

I mentioned that there is no point in casting pearls swine. Ram's response to the criticism above vindicated my position. The response was an incredible mix of naked lies, hasty denials and shameless claims.

First the naked lies:

There is adequate and balanced coverage of inner-party differences in the CPI(M) in Kerala.On thewhole, the coverage reflects the state of affairs.

One newspaper doesn’t generally reproduce what another publishes.

Not a single opportunity is missed to highlight the vituperative remarks attributed to Modi. Why can't CBCNN do the same in its backyard when the foul-mouthed Karunanidhi makes equally disgusting remarks against a religion?Modi's remarks are about the minorities and Karunanidhi targets the majority. Is this the reason for CBCNN's selective condemnation?
Are only comments against minorities "newsworthy"?Despite all this , does Ram claim to be balanced?

Now, the hasty denials.

There is no preferential treatment given to the DMK other than what is inevitable when a party is in government.

So, did the AIADMK get such a coverage when it was in power?Do the BJP governments get such coverage?He may even go on to say that the CPI(M) does not get preferential treatment. (Note that he has carefully side-stepped the issue of left bias.)

And the most laughable of the lot- Shameless claim:

We have balanced and fair coverage. Above all, it is factual, nothing embroidered or propagandist. Nothing to be defensive about. We don’t do campaignjournalism. We have an estimated four million readers who continue to support The Hindu, largely for its reliability and balance.

I did not have to search a lot to pull out the evidences cited above. Those were some of the many I could think of. Does not all these fly in the face of Ram's claims?

The RE I guess is suffering from MPD(Multiple Personality Disorder).Towards the end , he writes:

The policy of not publishing abusive or wounding comments is laudable. But it needs to be followed uniformly, whether it is a Chief Minister or an unknown BJP ex-MP (whose remarks were published with the Hindi words and English translation).

If you are rubbing your eyes in disbelief, hold on, he is not done yet. ..

On the other hand, the editorial said the remarks were “wildly misrepresented.” Mr.Karunanidhi had not said so but had made further comments... The Hindu’s strong points, listed by the Editor-in-Chief, are unquestioned and it is generally balanced.The long-term strengths of this newspaper have been independence,seriousness, newsiness, credibility, fairness, balance and critical spirit.

I have nothing to add.The title pretty much sums up my mood.

I have no faith left in the prosecution and the government. I am not saying
Article 356. You have to protect people and punish the guilty. What else is raj
dharma? You quit if you cannot prosecute the guilty. It is not your personal

The first quote was the Supreme Court's observation against the Gujarat Govt in the Best Bakery case. Frontline did not publish an 'apology' for failing to mention that these were mere oral observations.It did not come up with a scathing editorial criticizing 'judicial overreach'. But, when the DMK government is facing the music, the choicest of words is reserved for the same court. Sample this:

The supreme court is supreme only when it takes on the BJP. When CBCNN's friends face the heat, it springs to their defence.Why this special treatment for the DMK? If this is not double speak, what is? So much for "objective journalism".

The "gutter inspector" saw only what she wanted to. ELM is looked down upon as worse than scum in Gujarat. It is a surprise if anyone even glanced at her, leave alone give an interview.

The Koli resentment against Mr. Modi is of more recent origin and can
be traced to a double incident of rape and murder that shook the
community in mid-May. The two Koli girls had gone to a shrine in
Junagadh where one of them was raped and the other killed. Today with
the criminals still at large, the inconsolable Kolis are disillusioned
with Mr. Modi and the BJP — a party they have largely been voting in
the past 15 years.


Some of the anger was visible at the Tarnetar mela which came to a
close with the visit of the Chief Minister. Mr. Modi waved to the
crowds which refused to return the gesture, remaining sullen for all of
the time he was there.

At a recent function in Bhuj in the Kutch region, he called Mr. Modi a “dictator” comparable to “Adolf Hitler”

As I returned to Ahmedabad, the negatives seemed to outweigh the
positives for Mr. Modi in an election which the Gujarati intellectual
class — barring a minuscule section — said the Chief Minister could
find tough but which he would win anyway.

Maoist strike reported with authenticity

Barring the one mention of "reportedly" in the last para, the entire article sounds very factual and based on authentic sources. Contrast this with the "alleged", "reported", "anonymous sources" used so freely while reporting BJP statements.

Concerned over the loss of some of its top leaders and cadre either
in encounters or through surrenders, the banned CPI (Maoist) is
reportedly making major efforts to strike back at the police and
thereby instil confidence in its cadre, militia members and sections of
people supporting the party.

One major issue the party is concentrating on is to hit back at the
police and the Government. It killed Zilla Praja Parishad
vice-president Samida Ravishankar in May. And in the distant Nellore
district, they made an attempt on the life of former Chief Minister and

Rajyalakshmi. Both incidents are related to the naxalite party’s strong

agency area as it had lost a strong ground in the Nallamala region.
Even as the State police was increasing its pressure on the agency area
and recently killed four naxalites in an encounter in G. Madugula
mandal, the Maoist party is making all efforts to strengthen its hold.
It is also reported that cadre from Orissa and Chattisgarh are being
brought to this area.

As part of its plans to strike at the police, the Andhra Orissa
Border State Zonal Committee’s military commission head Chalapathi,
considered as one of the top strategists of the party, organised a
meeting on the banks of Sileru river in Malkangiri district of Orissa.

Strategy

About 30 persons of different cadre of the CPI (Maoist) from Andhra
and Orissa areas had reportedly attended the meeting held from
September 29 to October 1. Discussions were reportedly on strategy to
carry out ‘lightning strikes’ against the police.

On the one hand, the UPA was engaged in a self-destructive war with the Left parties on the civil nuclear cooperation and deepening strategic relations with the United States.

For the BJP to go on the offensive over a decision that can be traced to its own government is a patent absurdity that voters will see through.

What a parody. Such observations are reserved only for BJP, while the Leftist hypocrisy is conveniently swept under the floor.

Worse, party leaders have allowed the most fanatical fringe elements such as the blood-thirsty, fatwa-issuing Ram Vilas Vedanti, a former BJP MP, to set the terms and the pace of their ‘Ram Sethu’ campaign.

is not "alleged", but "reported".

It is funny to see the assertion by Chindu of "alleged" DMK men! In
the TV coverage one could see any number of DMK flags. Besides,
several news websites reported the presence of a DMK state minister, a
local DMK MLA and the DMK mayor of Chennai. Only for Chindu these are
"alleged" DMK fellows!!

Following the footsteps of Marx, the Indian communists have deep hatred of anything Indian and are opponents of any kind of pride in Indian heritage. The communists also hold that India is not one nation but a ‘collection of nationalities’.

Another major tenet of Indian Marxist’s orthodoxy is that for national reconstruction you have to first destroy the existing nation.

The communists have had many ideological splits. Communists in India
are splintered into several groupings like the CPI, CPM, CPI (M-L),
Maoists and the People’s War Group. But despite several ‘historical
blunders’ that they keep committing with regularity, they have all
remained steadfast to the twin agenda of weakening and destroying the
existing Indian nation and obliterate the ‘bourgeois’ notion of pride
in India’s past.

Thus in 1942 the communists not just supported the British but
also acted as their stool pigeons. Many underground revolutionaries
were betrayed to the British secret police, who went on to hang them.
George Orwell has written extensively on this subject and evidence of
this is littered in declassified files of British India, now available
at India Office Library and Records in London.

Subhas Chandra Bose, who fought for Indian freedom and was no
Japanese stooge, was denounced as fascist and vilified by the Marxists.
In today’s communist-ruled Bengal, the towering contributions of Swami
Vivekananda are a distant memory and sought to be pushed out of public
memory. Neither is Aurobindo Ghosh remembered. All the three are
inconvenient to Marxist ideology.

On November 13, 1962 while replying to the discussions in the Rajya
Sabha, Lal Bahadur Shastri pointed out that Jyoti Basu equated India
with China during the war and called the Chinese aggression as provoked
by Indian statements and “across an imaginary line called MacMohan
line”. But the Marxists were not merely satisfied with words. Kalimpong
town had become a den of Chinese spies. Every move of the Indian army
was monitored and reported to the enemy. Like in 1942, the communists
played a major role in helping the Chinese.

The long-time ideological opponents of Indian nationalism painted a
frightening scenario when India tested nuclear weapons in 1998. They
had greeted with a deafening silence each of the 45 declared nuclear
tests carried out by China since 1964. How come that throughout this
feverish pursuit by China of the means of nuclear deterrence, the
Indian communists never showed the slightest anxiety about a possible
outbreak of a nuclear war in Asia? The answer lies in their conviction
that China's policy stemmed from genuine nationalism as distinguished
from India's alleged pseudo-nationalism.

The Common Minimum Programme talks about changing the Indo-Israel
relations. The allusion is directly to the defence relationship. It is
through this that India had been promised the Falcon airborne system
that would give India a decided advantage over China and Pakistan in
air battles. China too wanted this system but the contract was
cancelled under American pressure. Now by downgrading relations with
US, the Marxists wish to cripple Indian defence and help China.

In all their plans of spreading communism in India, the
Marxists believe that the strong Indian armed forces are the biggest
obstacle. Their hatred of the armed forces is seen through many petty
acts that the West Bengal government regularly inflicts on the armed
forces personnel. Presently the Indian army seems to be getting an
upper hand over the Pakistani sponsored terrorists thanks to the
infantry equipment and training co-ordination with Israelis. The
Marxists hope that severing this link will automatically weaken the
armed forces, their biggest adversary.

How tolerant is N.Ram?

How often have we seen the intolerant and childish rants of N.Ram against the BJP because they were opposing some communist idiocy. Here again, N.Ram lashes out with acerbic remarks on Sen. Twice Naxal Ram has used the expression "foot in mouth disease" to describe Sen's remarks. The utter contempt with which he dismisses Sen as unfit to be India's ambassador anywhere is quite appalling. Naxalism in Ram stems from this kind of violent intolerance to anything that is not in mute conformance.

But is foot in mouth disease the only problem with this diplomat? While the Telegraph is dismissive of Left, as it should rightly be, Chindu goes into ecstatic frenzy projecting the crucial role played the Left on the nuclear deal.

N.Ram does not condemn attack on Taslima

Writers and artists have been targeted many times by the fundamentalist fringe in India but the cowardly attack on Taslima Nasrin is a first on several counts. The exiled Bangladeshi feminist writer was roughed up in the full glare of cameras during a function held at the Hyderabad Press Club. The goons belonging to the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen were led by three party MLAs. Far from being remorseful, Majlis president Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi said the three le gislators and four others who were arrested “deserved a pat on their back for what they have done”; and noted regretfully that “we should have done more.” Other Majlis leaders threatened to kill Ms. Nasrin if she set foot in Hyderabad again. Under the circumstances, there is a widespread feeling that those responsible for the attack — who were charged with rioting, trespass, and criminal intimidation and released on bail in a few hours after arrest — were let off lightly under the aegis of a soft government. While the Majlis is not a formal ally of the ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh, it has some kind of understanding with it. This was in evidence when the Majlis backed the Congress candidate in last year’s Karimnagar Parliamentary by-election.

N.Ram has stated the facts till now. Where is the opinion?
The attack was first on several counts? Is N.Ram suggesting that this is the first time Muslim have targeted dissent with violence?
There is a "feeling" that those responsible for the attack were let off lightly. No condemnation of this let off by N.Ram. No sermons to the "soft" Congress government.

The attack could have been prevented had the organiser of the function
informed the police in advance about the presence of Ms. Nasrin

Finally, N.Ram points the finger and it is at the organiser -- how brilliant.But the muslim angst needs a few words of comfort. And N.Ram does exactly that in his next line. The MIM aggressiveness is justified on political grounds. If N.Ram can get so dirty, he might as well get naked.

Concerted efforts by political rivals — particularly, the Communist
Party of India (Marxist), which has highlighted the utter lack of
development in this area — to break the Majlis’ hold over the Old City
seem to have rattled its leadership.

Hail the communist party, naked.ram.

As for Ms. Nasrin, she has been a target of Islamists ever since the publication of Lajja,
a novel that captures her response to the anti-Hindu riots that broke
out in parts of Bangladesh following the demolition of the Babri Masjid
in late 1992. Her account of the communal frenzy a
nd the mistreatment of the Hindu minority made her persona non grata
in Bangladesh. Her views on religion, sexual freedom, and women’s
emancipation have led to death threats from Muslim fundamentalists.

Since the Hindu has not used my letters I summarize here points made in the hope that this discussion can reach a wider forum.

Dear Sir,

In recent weeks, Mr N Ram has written articles in The Hindu ("The Politics Of Tibet: A 2007 Reality Check", July 5, 2007) and Frontline ("Future Tibet", July 14-27, 2007), which present a remarkably rosy picture of the situation in Tibet and are uncritically supportive of Chinese policies in the region. I have written to him a number of times pointing out some of the inconsistencies in his reporting and the fact that such misrepresentations of fact could be seen as pure propaganda on behalf of the Chinese government. Unfortunately, Mr Ram has not deemed it necessary to extend even the courtesy of an acknowledgment letter, let alone to provide a platform for a fair debate on the issue of Tibet. I summarize here, some of the main points I made in my letters to Mr Ram in the hope that this discussion can reach a wider forum.

On more than one occasion, Mr Ram makes the crude comparison of the Dalai Lama's international popularity as a religious leader to Ayatollah Khomenei, thereby signalling his intentions to demonise him. He then rails against what he describes as the Dalai Lama's "alignment with colonial interests and western powers...". One could look at this criticism in the context of China's vast holding of US Treasury bonds, which literally keeps its economy afloat, and ask, who is more aligned with western powers - the Chinese government or the Dalai Lama? One could also easily point the finger of colonialism to China's forcible occupation of Tibet.

Mr Ram claims that, "while the Tibetan Buddhist doctrine of reincarnation belongs to the mystical-religious realm and asks a lot from 21st century believers, the Dalai Lama's approach even to rebirth is decidedly ideological-political." However, he also says that the Chinese government continues to follow "centuries-old custom and tradition that empower it to recognise and appoint both the Dalai and the Panchen Lama." The historical accuracy of this statement is debatable but it begs the question, why does an avowedly atheistic Communist Party find it necessary to involve itself in the "mystical-religious realm" in the 21st century?

Mr Ram contends that China's constitution "guarantees religious freedom to all citizens and regional autonomy to ethnic minorities in extensive parts of a giant country." Is it really enough for a journalist to cite the existence of a law to prove that all is as it should be? Surely he is aware of the ongoing repression of religious freedom in Tibet? Today, it is a crime in Tibet to be found in possession of the Dalai Lama's picture. Amnesty International's 2006 China report stated that in Tibet, "freedom of religion, expression and association continued to be severely restricted and arbitrary arrests and unfair trials continued." On the fate of groups such as Falun Gong, even the avowedly left-wing journal, CounterPunch, has made grave allegations against the Chinese government (see article in the October 1-15, 2006 issue).

Mr Ram mentions "China's unprecedented economic growth" and "inclusive and nuanced socio-political and cultural policies" as markers of its "exceptional patience" in dealing with the Tibet issue. This glowing picture is at odds with the reality of a country where the growing division between the rich and the poor saw no less than 23,000 incidents of rural and urban unrest in 2006, many of which were brutally quelled by force.

Even more beguiling is Mr Ram's continued faith in the Communist Party of China's Marxist credentials - "The law... defines national regional autonomy as the basic political system of the Communist Party of China to solve the country's ethnic issues using Marxism-Leninism". That the CPC has now launched a form of 'Leninist capitalism' untrammeled by democratic freedoms or trade union rights is fairly well-known. The only ideology guiding China's present rulers is that of absolute power at any cost.

By consigning Tibet's fate so unambiguously to the implied benevolence of its Chinese overlords, Mr Ram seems to forget that India has a stake in this matter. He dismisses the Dalai Lama's claim that Tibet had "been a strategic 'buffer state' in the heart of Asia guaranteeing the region's stability" for centuries. Yet, the truth is that until the People's Liberation Army invaded Tibet in 1950, India and China had never shared a common border. What is Mr Ram's response to Chinese Ambassador to India, Mr Sun Yuxi’s blithe assertion last November that "the whole of the state of Arunachal Pradesh is Chinese territory. And Tawang is only one of the places in it."? Surely, even he knows that had Tibet not been forcibly deprived of its sovereignty, such imperious statements from his Chinese friends would not be forthcoming? Would any Chinese newspaper publish a defence of India's sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh in the manner in which The Hindu and Frontline see fit to blindly defend the Chinese line on Tibet? Or does Mr Ram have a different measure for basic democratic freedoms in different countries?

It is truly unfortunate that Mr Ram should choose to deprive his readership of a balanced perspective on the question of Tibet.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has picked on the alleged murderous attack on Jamnagar Municipal Corporation Mayor Manharbhai Jhala to counter-attack the Congress.

The bias in this report is evident from the very first statement. CBCNN is trying to suggest that Modi is unnecessarily picking on the unblemished Congress. The Special Correspondent dismisses the attack as an "allegation". Obviously, the special correspondent is passing his judgment while reporting an event -- this is against Journalism 101 principles.

Mr. Modi not only condemned the alleged attack led by two former BJP colleagues but also demanded that Congress president Sonia Gandhi “apologise to the nation” for the “murderous assault” by some of her partymen.

Once again the murder attempt is dismissed as "allegation". The Special Correspondent is also parading half-truths and half-lies to mislead the reader. That the two attackers were former BJP colleagues is less relevant than that they are Congress members now -- this fact is deliberately not disclosed. Deliberately trying to mislead the reader is journalistic prostitution.

After two days of silence on the issue, Mr. Modi chose to convert into a political platform an official function of dedicating to the people a power sub-station at Kadi in Mehsana district to attack Ms. Gandhi. At his behest, the BJP units all over the State have started taking out processions and rallies “in sympathy” of Mr Jhala.

The special correspondent is actively picking on Modi. This is way beyond journalism. CBCNN is committed to drubbing BJP as a fascist regime and Modi as a dictator. It is according to this code book that this special correspondent is alleging that Modi instigated the BJP units. Once again, notice that an allegation -- that Modi instigated the BJP units -- is declared as truth. It is more appropriate to call this hate-mongering than journalism.

Mr Jhala, who had come out unscathed after some crude oil was thrown at him, apparently to “blacken his face” and not to burn him alive as being alleged by the BJP, is attending his routine work.

Is the special correspondent upset that Mr Jhala is alive and attending his work? After all, according to the communist code of conduct, isn't any Hindu better off dead? My question to the special correspondent is, how has it been authenticated that the intention was to blacken Mr Jhala's face and not burn him? Why is this declared as the absolute truth and while all BJP's statements are allegations?

Is it acceptable to throw crude oil on someone? According to CBCNN, yes. It is acceptable to throw oil on any Hindu or petrol into a train carrying karsevaks(Godhra?). In the land of "spontaneous combustion", things catch fire mysteriously but nobody can be blamed for it. It is just an accident. So drenching someone in oil is not a serious issue and if the person is burnt alive due to "spontaneous combustion", it is the dead man's fault.

What CBCNN is unleashing using its intellectual prowess is genocide. It actively supports Islamic terrorism against Hindus. It condones any sort of aggression against Hindus and anything associated with Hindus - be it a cultural symbol or a political party.

Yet there is no sign of a debate in the community beyond easy platitudes, and it remains in denial.

“Girl sets herself afire after rape” said a report on a 12/14-year-old girl, belonging to the Scheduled Caste Bairawa community, who set herself on fire after she was raped by a Dalit youth. “Seven members of Dalit family found dead” narrated the tragedy of another family. “Dalit tortured, FIR against kin” was a report of an attack on a Dalit youth by some of his family for spurning a marriage proposal.

The readers raised these questions: unless the incident is related to the caste of the victim, what purpose does the mention of caste serve? If it is some other caste, is that mentioned? There is a tendency to magnify the crime by giving it a Dalit colour. Does this not perpetuate caste?

Is “dalit” germane to any of these stories? Remove the word, there is
no loss of news value. The addition can only be seen as an attempt to
add colour, to sensationalise.
